Devoted Vanderbilt Player/Fan dies

Posted on: March 29, 2008 4:31 pm

Herb Rich, a three-sport star at Vanderbilt and defensive captain of the New York Giants when they won the NFL title in 1956. A running back for the 1948 Vanderbilt team that went 8-2-1, Rich shifted to safety as a pro. A sixth-round draft pick by the Baltimore Colts, he logged seven seasons with Baltimore, the Los Angeles Rams and the New York Giants. His 23-yard average on punt returns for the 1950 Colts stands as an NFL record.

Rich  went to Vanderbilt Law School while a NFL pro and has been practicing  law since football retirement in Nashville. Rich  was also an avid tennis player and even in his 70's was  known to still be able to run backwards on the golf course after hitting a long one at his country club. Rich had a fall at home about 3 weeks ago and death was due to complications.

Rich continued to support Vanderbilt and their athletics long after his graduation and was proud of his Vanderbilt friends of over 50 years. His most enduring legacy will be the many lives he touched. Rich was always a gentleman and a role model for future athletes and students of Vanderbilt.

Condolences to his wife Carla, 3 children, multi friends and clients and to the whole Vanderbilt community.

Yes, Herb Rich  was a fine example of how life can be for a athlete after Pro sports without negativity and he showed what a good role model someone can be.

I think that is great since you don't see that much anymore.

No you really don't see enough of that kind of class behaviour.   And here in Tennessee, at the moment Herb Rich's life is surely a contrast to life of someone like Pac-Man Jones who so far has wasted his opportunities.

Jones will be gone soon enough and Rich will be remembered for a long time, it sounds like.

Thanks El-G

I just wanted to be sure there was some acknowledgment on CBS of kind of man he was. I am sure in his age group of near eighty there are many people dying each day who contributed over the years to society and with our busy world it is easy for their contributions to soon be forgotten.

My Dad was sharing with me he saw Mr Rich recently and they were friends at Vanderbilt. He was telling me how great a guy he was and how much he loved the Dores. The article in the paper sounded like he could have written it as he said some of the very things I read this morning. He was a great man and will be missed.  Thanks for the mention Sue.  Well deserved.

From everything I have read Mr. Rich he clearly was a class act and I know he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

He surely led a full life. May God Bless him and his family.

Since he did play with the Giants there were articles about his life and passing in today's papers.

Good stuff, Sue.  I was friends with many of the football players during my time at Vandy and knew about Mr Rich thru them.  Many of them knew who he was and had met them.  As you stated, he was a strong supporter of Vandy athetics and stayed in close touch with the program.  I saw the story in the local paper here in NJ, the Asbury Park Press.  So he is being remembered in many different places.  My prayers and best wishes to the Rich family.
